The ranking is by votes. That measures how many people voted for a server here, not how many played on it. A server with a lot of votes had a community willing to vote; the number says nothing about actual player counts.
Clicking a name opens the detail page with category, level cap, languages and description. For older entries the linked server site is often gone – that comes with the territory.
